When planning your Philadelphia wedding, you’ll find no shortage of beautiful and iconic spots to capture your love story. From the historic charm of Old City and the grandeur of the Art Museum steps to the lush greenery of Fairmount Park and the modern vibes of the Navy Yard, there’s a backdrop for every couple’s style.
Before you get started, though, it’s important to note that many of these locations require permits for professional photography.
Since January 2025, Independence National Historical Park has updated its policy on wedding photography permits with the passage of the EXPLORE Act. For couples, this means a permit is no longer required for most wedding photos taken on the grounds. As long as photography takes place in public areas, uses only hand-carried equipment, doesn’t require reserving a site, and doesn’t interfere with other visitors, we can capture your images freely without added fees or paperwork.
This update makes the process easier for our couples, allowing us to move throughout the park’s historic spaces to document your wedding day without the need for permits. All previously approved permits will still be honored, so if another group has a reservation, we’ll simply work around their scheduled time and location.
It’s important to note that this is one of the most popular wedding photo areas in Philadelphia, and it’s very common to be photographing alongside multiple wedding parties. Because of this, large “building shots” of Independence Hall can be difficult to capture. However, the best part of this location is that there are countless photo options within a 1–2 block radius, making it easy to pivot and still get a full variety of portraits.
Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia, the Rodin Museum offers one of the most picturesque settings for wedding photography. Home to one of the largest collections of Auguste Rodin’s work outside of France, the museum blends artistry and romance seamlessly. The Beaux-Arts architecture, serene reflecting pool, and beautifully landscaped gardens create a timeless backdrop for capturing wedding day memories. From the grandeur of The Thinker to the intimacy of The Kiss, every corner of the grounds provides a striking setting for photos.
The inner courtyard and reflecting pool are especially stunning — and it’s worth noting that photography here requires a permit, which is currently one of the hardest to secure in Philadelphia. Limited availability and frequent on-site events make it extremely competitive, but the reward is unmatched: Rodin offers some of the softest, cleanest natural light in the city, making it a dream for timeless daytime portraits.
Permits are available in two time slots: 10:00 AM–1:00 PM or 1:00 PM–4:00 PM, with a $100 fee.
This area is incredibly popular for wedding photos, with many couples drawn to the sweeping Rocky Steps for that iconic Philadelphia shot. The front steps themselves are public space and not part of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s permit system, and enforcement is generally relaxed. Couples often still capture portraits here without a permit, though crowds can be a factor.
For more controlled and private options, the Azalea Garden (just behind the museum) and the rear steps of the Art Museum do require a permit through Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. These areas provide beautiful pathways and greenery, offering a quieter backdrop for portraits even on busy weekends.
Nearby, the Water Works also offers stunning river views and a perfect vantage point of Boathouse Row. Photo permits are required here and are typically valid only until 3:00 PM, with limited availability if a wedding is scheduled at the site that day. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation charges an hourly fee for permits, which varies by location.
Flowers are usually in bloom in April/May; timing may vary slightly each year.
If you envision capturing your portraits with the industrial backdrop of the Ben Franklin Bridge at Race Street Pier — with the serene flow of the Delaware River beneath — this spot delivers an iconic Philadelphia feel with waterfront views.
Race Street Pier is a great option for couples who want something modern, open, and scenic, and it pairs beautifully with nearby Old City locations for a well-rounded portrait experience.
Located in one of Philadelphia’s oldest neighborhoods, the charm of the narrow streets and well cared for houses really shows off the best that Philadelphia has to offer. There are several spots within a small walkable area from Elfreth’s Alley as well, so if you have some comfy shoes and the weather is great, just wander and see what you can find!
If you have transportation, this pairs well with Race St Pier.
Weather is inconsequential when taking wedding portraits at Headhouse Square, making it a rare outdoor location in Philadelphia where couples can sidestep the threat of rain. A walkway of string lights also create a romantic atmosphere in the heart of a classic Philadelphia city block. This location is beautiful rain or shine, due to the various photo locations within the area.
Another bonus of headhouse square is ample parking!
Right next to Headhouse Market is Stamper Street. This small Old City Alley is close to Headhouse and creates beautiful wedding photographs in the Fall. Green and yellow decorate the cobblestones, so couples feel like they’re walking together in a whimsical colonial town.
Capturing wedding pictures at the FDR Park Boathouse in Philadelphia offers a picturesque backdrop amidst the serene ambiance of the park’s lush greenery and tranquil waters. The boathouse’s elegant architecture and scenic surroundings provide an enchanting setting for couples to immortalize their special day, with ample opportunities for both outdoor and indoor shots. A permit is required through Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and fees and availability vary by date and time.
Hands down, Broad Street is one of the most popular photo spots in the city! Day or night, rain or shine, it offers incredible opportunities for stunning portraits. With City Hall as your backdrop, it is classic Philadelphia at its finest.
We strongly recommend stopping at Broad and Walnut as the main spot. You also have the option to take photos in front of the Union League, though availability cannot be guaranteed at this location.
It’s also worth noting that the city has approved construction plans that will slowly impact the Broad Street corridor over time — meaning this location may not always be available in the same way it is now. If Broad Street is on your must-have list, we recommend taking advantage of it while you still can.
One of the most dynamic spots in the entire city, city hall boasts staircases, columns, hallways, and some of the best light in the city.
It’s perfect for your first look, there is lots of room to spread out, and it’s great for a rainy day option.
In the heart of one of Philadelphia’s most upscale neighborhoods, Rittenhouse Square is an easy stop depending on your ceremony location. It features sweeping walkways, stone columns, and a beautiful central fountain.
Keep in mind, it is a busy spot year-round!
